MEDPASS Second Opinions

The diagnosis of cancer can feel devastating, turning life upside down in a single moment and filling each day with uncertainty. In the midst of shock and fear, there is a deep desire to make every moment count, to maximize the time available and spend it in the most meaningful ways. It becomes essential to seek the best possible advice, to understand all available options, and to access treatments that offer both effectiveness and dignity. With compassionate, expert guidance and a clear plan of care, it is possible to move forward with greater confidence, focusing not only on fighting the disease but also on preserving quality of life, connection, and hope.

Pediatric cancer is a profoundly devastating diagnosis that shatters the sense of safety and certainty surrounding childhood. Families are suddenly thrust into a world of hospitals, treatments, and difficult decisions, while children face pain, fear, and disruptions to school, friendships, and everyday joys. The emotional toll can be overwhelming, as parents balance hope with worry and siblings cope with confusion and change. Beyond the physical challenges, there are lasting impacts on mental health, finances, and family life. Yet within this hardship, many families also discover remarkable strength, resilience, and support from medical teams, communities, and organizations dedicated to ensuring that no child or family faces pediatric cancer alone.

FAQ

1. Who will give me a second opinion?

Leading cancer specialists in the United States, working at top academic and comprehensive cancer centers, will provide the second opinion. These experts review each case using the latest evidence-based guidelines and advanced diagnostic tools to support informed treatment decisions. These will include recommendations for treatment where appropriate.

2. How long will it take?

Most second opinions are provided within two weeks, but the exact timeframe depends on the complexity of the situation and the information available. Straightforward cases can be reviewed more quickly, while matters involving multiple specialists, extensive records, or detailed analysis may require additional time to ensure a thorough and reliable assessment.

3. What will be reviewed?

.The second opinion review includes all relevant medical documentation related to the cancer diagnosis and treatment. This typically covers clinical letters and consultation summaries, pathology and lab results, imaging reports and scans, surgical and procedure reports, as well as biomarker and molecular profiling information. Together, these records provide a comprehensive view of the case to support an informed expert assessment.

4. What are the steps in getting a second opinion?

After connecting with a MEDPASS case worker, your first step is to create an account and upload all relevant medical information to the patient portal. Medically trained physicians will then review your records and prepare a detailed summary, including all the questions you would like the expert oncologist to address. An expert oncologist in the appropriate specialty will conduct a thorough analysis of your case and provide a comprehensive report with recommendations, including treatment options. All of your questions will be answered in this report, which will be uploaded to the portal for you. If you have any additional questions, these can also be sent back to the expert for further clarification.

5. Is my medical information and data secure?

Yes. HIPAA-compliant patient portal allows you to upload your medical information with confidence, knowing your privacy is fully protected. All data is encrypted during transfer and storage, and access is strictly limited to authorized healthcare professionals involved in your care.
